Fun Dial-Up Facts!
In 1941, in response to commercial and military demand, IBM
developed equipment that allowed transmission of data over
telegraph lines. This equipment transmitted data at a
whopping 50-100 bits per second!
The world's first commercial
telephone line modem was created in 1958 by AT&T.
They called it the digital subset. The data rate for these
was about 300 bits per second.
In 1980, modem speed had finally increased to 14.4 Kbps (14,400
bits per second).
In 1996 Dr. Brent Townshend
created the 56 Kbps (56,000 bits
per second) modem which is still the speed used by commercial
dial-up modems today!
