6-7-2008 How Do You Download Large
Files With a Dial-Up Connection?
Downloading large files with dial-up can be a headache to
say the least. You may start the download of your favorite
new game or program and leave for several hours (or go to
sleep) and pray you come back to claim your prize. More
often than you would like ya come back to see only (oh no!)
a partially downloaded file due to disconnection. Ahh, the
futility! You just waited 10 maybe 12 hours thinking you
would come back to your computer to test out this new found
functionality only to see the disconnection notice mocking
you. For us it may result in several choice words we hope
our neighbors don't hear.
There is hope for this "dial-up affliction" however. As many
of you already know there are some helpful add-on programs
called download managers. They are able to recover multiple
downloads if they get interupted and continue on their
course to finality. In addition, some have extra abilities
like reconnecting automatically with your provider
immediately if disconnected (pretty cool!), or speeding up
certain downloads as well. We've compiled a list of download
managers that are best rated and well known.
Of course these may lead to another problem- what if you
need a download manager to download a download manager(ahhh
our heads hurt!)? Ok that we can't help ya with, our brains
are just too small to figure that one out! You're on your
own from here:)
1. Internet Download Manager
(www.internetdownloadmanager.com): Rated 5 Stars on CNET's
download.com (tough to achieve) with too many other awards
to name. It is a full featured download manager and is free
to use for 30 days. Check 'em out.
2. FreeDownloadManager (www.freedownloadmanager.org): Its
description includes some of our favorite words: "free" and
"open source!" Way too many features to list but a few are
download acceleration, resume broken downloads, and Youtube
video downloading. Check out their website for more.
3. Getright (www.getright.com): A popular download manager
that is free with limited features and $19.95 to unlock all
features. Its a well known and stable program.
4. FlashGet (www.flashget.com): Another top rated program
from CNET. This quote from the CNET review staff sums it up
nicely: "FlashGet looks and feels like a download
accelerator worth paying for, which makes it all the more
appealing since it's free." There ya go- its good and its
free. What more could you want?
What's your favorite? Let us know and we will list it here.
