5/12/2008- What is Accelerated
Dial-Up? We Break Down How it Works.
So you've seen the ads
promising greatly improved, broadband-like speeds and wonder
how the companies can speed up your phone line connection.
Actually they can't. The FCC has placed a limit on pulse
code modulation (PCM) modems to transmit data only up to
53Kbps over phone line connections. This limit was
implemented to protect the integrity of the phone network.
So your ISP cannot technically speed up your phone line's
bandwidth. They would be breaking the law if they did so!
What accelerated plans can do
however is use some pretty cool software to compress and
store data to simulate a faster connection. When you click
on a web page, your accelerated dial-up provider accesses
the page first and immediately compresses the text, images,
and other web objects. These compressed files are then sent
to your computer where additional software decodes the
compressed files and displays them to you on your web
browser. Typically website text is compacted to just 5%,
increasing effective throughput to approximately 1000 Kbps
(quite a bit), and images are lossy-compressed to 15-20%
increasing throughput to ~350 Kbps (also not bad).
The downside to compression is
that the image quality is degraded. This is a small trade
off for the increased speeds for many. Users can always
change the settings for compressing images, or can click on
an image to see its full quality form with most systems. For
those that select a higher image quality, pages that are
largely text, like Craigslist or Google, will still almost
always load much faster since they are mostly image free.
Another way some companies are
accelerating dial-up browsing is storing (or caching) more
of your commonly visited web pages. This way each time you
visit the site your browser or your ISP can access the
stored data instead of grabbing it off of a web server from
who knows where.
So now you know how accelerated
dial-up works and you can choose a plan if you wish. Almost
all of our providers on our site has an accelerated plan.
It will cost you a bit more however as there is extensive
computer processing involved by your ISP. More processing
power means more computers and thus higher investment.
However the time saved by many that use the accelerated
plans could be well worth the added expense.
Cheers,
